If you want to understand politics in the United States you need to understand that it's all about monopoly. The main goal of US foreign policy is to maintain global dominance with no country powerful enough to challenge US hegemony. This was spelled out famously in 1992 in the Pentagon's so called Wolfowitz Doctrine. This came a year after the overthrow of the Soviet Union and the US essentially was saying 'We are an empire, we dominate the entire world, we do not want any near peer strategic competitors.'
But maintaining a monopoly is not just the main goal of US foreign policy, it also helps us to understand domestic politics and the economy of the US. This was spelled out very clearly by one of the most powerful billionaires in silicon valley, Peter Thiel. Peter Thiel is a close ally of Donald Trump and he helped to fund Trump's first campaign to be US president.
Thiel was a co-founder of the powerful US corporation Palantir which has been given a lot of contracts by the Trump administration. Trump is using Palantir to spy on Americans, to make a massive database with information about average Americans.
